The International Institute of Islamic Thought



The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) is a center of excellence in educational research and Islamic thought whose main interest is on carrying out evidence-based research in advancing education in Muslim Societies and the dissemination of this research through publication and translation, teaching, policy recommendations, and strategic engagements. The Institute was established as a non-profit 501(c)(3) non-denominational organization in the United States of America in 1981. The headquarters are in Herndon, Virginia, in the suburbs of Washington DC.

Integration of Knowledge (IOK) Winter Program 2025
The Fairfax Institute (TFI) proudly presents the Integration of Knowledge (IOK) Winter Program, a transformative learning experience aimed at the integration of revealed and acquired knowledge. Over two weeks, undergraduate students will apply the Maqasid Al-Quraniyyah Methodology to deeply engage with the Quran and the Sunnah and extrapolate universal principles that guide their comprehensive understanding of the world. Students will hone their critical and analytical skills to examine human intellectual heritage based on a global-centric Quranic worldview. Read more…





Maqāṣid Al-Sharīʿah: A Civilizational Perspective
The previous decade witnessed a plethora of books on the subject of maqasid (aims of Shariah), stressing that Islam’s commandments have overarching aims, and that the individual texts of Qur’an and hadith can only be adequality understood within the universal principles of Islam. While the classical work on maqasid is immense, that of Shatibi (d. 1388 C.E.) gained the utmost authority as it theorized for five general aims of Shariah, which can take one of three levels of priority. THE CONTEMPORARY postnormal world is posing for Muslims ever strange ethical, financial, and medical dilemmas for which modern jurists are expected to provide a suitable theological response. Yet even with an encyclopedic knowledge of Islamic law, the task facing them is daunting. In the real world this level of complexity has led to chaos in fatwa issuance with many scholars voicing concern at the direction to which things are moving and calling for the process to be regulated. We are delighted to announce the publication of ‘Islamic Legal Methodology: A New Perspective On Uşŭl Al-Fiqh’ authored by Ahmad Kazemi-Moussavi and Hamid Mavani.
